Woods, McIlroy, Mickelson, all the big names will be in Quail Hollow as the Wells Fargo Championships hosts the strongest tournament field since Augusta. Quail Hollow is traditionally one of the toughest par 72’s on the Tour, and the short game usually spells the difference. Here’s a look at the best bets.…
Zach Johnson (30/1): He finished solo second in his last start at Harbour Town two weeks ago, and Johnson has gone top-20 in three of his past five starts. He’s always been solid at Quail Hollow. Johnson finished T6 last year and has been top-25 in three of his past four starts here.
Rory McIlroy (7/1): He was a huge disappointment at Augusta (T40), where he couldn’t erase memories of his 2011 collapse. But he has better memories of Quail Hollow, where he grabbed his first Tour victory in 2010, and where he owns the course record (62, in the final round two years ago).
Bo Van Pelt (30/1): Van Pelt’s putter has been hot all year (Tour-leading 1.089 strokes gained), and he already has four top-10’s in 2012. He’s finished top-10 twice at Quail Hollow.
Phil Mickelson (10/1): Mickelson has been off since his T3 at Augusta, and Mickelson is returning to a course on which he’s had plenty of success over the years. In eight career starts at Quail Hollow, he’s gone top-10 six times.
Tiger Woods (9/1): Woods is looking to bounce back from a disappointing Masters (T40). His track record at Quail Hollow is strong, finishing in the top-11 four times in five starts, including a win in 2007.
