“The Greatest Show on Grass” kicks off on Thursday when the TOUR heads to Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Some golfers will be heading into Thursday’s event with less rest than expected after the Farmers Insurance Open’s final round had to be played into Monday. Regardless, these golfers will be excited to get back to Scottsdale for this tournament. This 7,216-yard course usually comes with some excellent weather and every winner since 1978 has won with a score that is double digits below par. It is a course that these golfers are comfortable playing at and we should be in store for some impressive rounds of golf this weekend.
Some players to keep an eye on heading into this one are Phil Mickelson and J.B. Holmes. Phil Mickelson has won this event three times in his career (1996, 2005, 2013) and Holmes has won twice (2006, 2008). Mickelson, however, is tied for the best score ever shot in this tournament. He shot a 28-under in 2013, which is the same score that Mark Calcavecchia shot back in 2001. Here’s a few guys that will be looking to break that record on Sunday:
Brooks Koepka (+1800) - Koepka shot a 15-under on his way to winning this tournament in 2015. The victory was huge for a young player like him and he’ll be looking to win his second straight in Scottsdale beginning Thursday. The fact that Koepka won last year isn’t the only thing he has going for him, though. Koepka is in fantastic form coming into this tournament. He shot a 21-under and finished t-3rd at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and that was after finishing in seventh at 18-under at the Hero World Challenge in December. Koepka likely won’t have great odds here, but that is because he is a serious threat to win his second straight. He is worth putting a few units on.
Bubba Watson (+900) - Watson has not played a tournament since the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but he has looked excellent this season. Watson shot a 15-under and finished t-10th at that event and that was after he won the Hero World Challenge with a 25-under in the beginning of December. Watson will be well rested coming into this event and should be hungry to earn a victory here. He has never won the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but he does have his fingerprints all over this event. Watson was the runner-up in each of the past two events and will now be looking to break through for a win of his own. As the pre-tournament favorite he should be in contention come Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Palmer (+3300)- Like Watson, Palmer will also be hungry to come away with a victory at this tournament. Palmer, along with Watson and Hideki Matsuyama, was a runner-up here in 2015 and he was also one of the runner-ups in 2006. Palmer has been in pretty good form recently, shooting a 16-under at the CareerBuilder Challenge after shooting a 12-Under at the Sony Open. Palmer is solid off the tee and will just need to find a way to putt well throughout this weekend. His odds are going to be favorable and he is definitely worth placing a unit or so on.
Mark Hubbard (+30000) - One dark horse that is worth noting is Hubbard, who has played very well this season. Hubbard, who joined the TOUR in 2012, has made all seven cuts in tournaments he’s played and there have been times where he has been near the top of the leaderboard. He has a ton of talent and it would not be surprising for him to put it all together at a course that is very easy to shoot a high score on. It’s worth putting a unit on him, as it would pay out huge if he ended up coming away with his first win.
