2024 NFL Teams and How They Fared Against The Spread

There’s an old saying in football gambling that good teams win and great teams cover. That axiom mostly held true this year.

Of the top 12 teams against the spread (ATS) this season, ten of them made the playoffs. The two that didn’t were the Cardinals and the Bengals.

The Chiefs and Texans are the only two teams that are in the playoffs with losing records against the spread.

In terms of terrible records ATS this year, the Titans were an abysmal 2-15. I searched back to 2000 and the 2024 Titans were the worst team ATS this century.

Note:

  1. The first three columns are each teams win-loss record against the spread (ATS) for the season. Using the closing line.
  2. The next three columns are each team’s win-loss record ATS as a favorite.
  3. The following three columns are each team’s win-loss record ATS as an underdog.
  4. The last three columns are whether each team’s games went over or under the posted total.
  5. T stands for Total (in terms of record).
  6. F stands for as a favorite.

Stats from the Standings:

  1. The Lions for the third consecutive season have the best record ATS. This year they were tied with the Broncos and Chargers.
  2. These teams were favored the most:
    1. The Lions and Ravens were favored in 16 games.
    2. The Chiefs and Eagles were favored in 14 games.
    3. The Bills, Bengals and 49ers were favored in 13 games.
    4. In addition to the 49ers and Bengals, the Falcons who missed the playoffs were favored in 12 games and the Jets 11 games.
  3. These teams were underdogs the most:
    1. The Patriots were underdogs in ever game.
    2. The Giants and Panthers were underdogs in 16 games.
    3. The Cowboys and Raiders were underdogs in 14 games.
    4. The Bears, Jaguars and Saints were underdogs in 13 games.
  4. Some pretty favorite ATS Stats:
    1. The Broncos were 8-0 as favorites.
    2. The Chargers were 10-2.
  5. Some ugly favorite ATS stats:
    1. The Titans were 0-5 as favorites
    2. The Browns were 0-4.
    3. The Seahawks were 1-4-1.
  6. Some pretty underdog ATS stats:
    1. The Eagles were 3-0.
    2. The Cardinals were 7-2
  7. Some ugly underdog ATS stats
    1. The 49ers were 0-4.
    2. The Titans were 2-9.
    3. The Jets were 1-5.
  8. The Ravens and Panthers had the most games go over the total with 13. The Bucs had 12.
  9. The Giants and Texans had the most games go under the total with 11.
  10. The Bears, Packers, and Colts had the exact same ATS record as last year.
  11. Detroit was 12-5 ATS in three straight seasons.
