Massachusetts Gaming Commissioner Goes on the Record About Prediction Markets

Sunday April 19, 2026 (11:49 am EDT)

Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chair Jordan Maynard joined WCVB's "On The Record" to discuss the expansion of sports betting licenses, the shelved online casino gaming bill and the growing debate over prediction markets.

Maynard was recently reappointed as commissioner for a second five-year term and redesignated as chair.

"With those events comes increased interest, and that increased interest gives us opportunities to talk about what we do and why we do it," he said. "We want to make gaming safer in Massachusetts.

"We're here to make sure that if we offer a product, if a licensee offers a product, that we hold them to account and we hold them to high standards.

""If it is legalized, we're going to make sure that we do a good job at the Gaming Commission," he said. "But the decision of whether or not to legalize it, that's up to the Legislature."

As for prediction markets specifically.

"These prediction markets are illegally offering sports wagers," Maynard said.

He alleges the companies are targeting and taking bets from people under the age of 21. Second, he said they are not putting up any safeguards around responsible gaming."

Maynard blasted Polymarket for taking bets on the Iran/US/Israel conflict.

"Taking bets on war and death is disgusting, and we would never allow that on a regulated site in Massachusetts," he said

FBI Director Kash Patel's Polymarket Chances for Leaving That Role Real Soon Are Now Greater Than 60%

Saturday April 18, 2026 (9:15 pm EDT)

FBI Director Kash Patel fired back at The Atlantic after its correspondent, Sarah Fitzpatrick, ran a piece Friday claiming he had a “freak-out” when a computer glitch convinced him he had been fired while also reporting that Patel “has alarmed colleagues with episodes of excessive drinking and unexplained absences.”

The article title says it all.

"The FBI Director Is MIA"

Patel denied the allegations on Saturday.  He tweeted out on X:

““[S]ee you and your entire entourage of false reporting in court. But do keep at it with the fake news, actual malice standard is now what some would call a legal lay up.”

The prediction markets are not taking kindly to Patel.

Polymarket traders have him out by June 30 with a 60% chance and by year's end with a 73% chance (nearly three quarters of all traders).

$162,656  has him out by the end of this month.  That's nearly 50 percent of traders.

Consider that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has long been among the favorites to be next to exit the administration of Donald Trump.  Hegseth's chances of being gone by end of June are just 19%.

The betting market on Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, being ousted has been among the most sought after here at Gambling911.com over the past year yet her chances of departing by June 30 are a mere 24%.

Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" Song Writer Don Schlitz dead at 73

Saturday April 18, 2026 (3:49 pm EDT)

It was arguably one of the best known songs related to gambling, "The Gambler" and became synonymous with Kenny Rogers.

The song writer was an icon on the country music scene as well.

The North Carolina native, Don Schlitz, died Thursday at a Nashville hospital following what the Grand Ole Opry described as a sudden illness. The cause of death was not immediately known.

“We are heartbroken by the news of the passing of Don Schlitz. Don loved his family, his home state of North Carolina, and above all, songs and songwriters. He carried that love into every room, every stage and every lyric he ever wrote,” said Sarah Trahern, Country Music Association CEO, in a statement Friday.

Strait of Hormuz Traffic Returns to Normal by End of April Betting Market - Just a 42 Percent Chance

Saturday April 18, 2026 (10:25 am EDT)

Despite some promising confirmations from both Iran's foreign minister and the U.S. President that the Strait of Hormuz is now open to traffic, traders aren't buying the notion that shipping traffic will return to normal by month's end.

In a social media post, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran announced that the strait “is fully open and ready for full passage.”
