Maryland Fails to Pass Sweepstakes Casino Ban as Session Ends
Monday April 20, 2026 (10:16 pm EDT)
Maryland lawmakers failed to pass legislation to ban sweepstakes casinos before the state’s legislative session concluded this month.
A pair of bills to prohibit online dual-currency casino-style games passed the Maryland House with overwhelming bipartisan support but neither made it through the Senate.
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Commission sent out dozens of cease-and-desist letters; officials estimated only around 25% of operators complied.

William Hill UK Owner Evoke Weighs $304 Million Takeover Bid From Bally's Intralot
Monday April 20, 2026 (9:51 am EDT)
(Reuters) - Betting group Evoke (EVOK.L), opens new tab, owner of William Hill UK and 888, is evaluating a takeover proposal from Greek lottery and gaming firm Bally's Intralot (BYLOTr.AT), opens new tab, it said on Monday, valuing the debt-laden UK company at 225.3 million pounds ($303.88 million).
The news sent Evoke's shares up nearly 16%.
The proposed 50 pence-per-share deal, a nearly 29% premium to Evoke's closing price on Friday, is expected to be an all-share combination with a partial cash alternative, the company said.
British tax hikes on online gaming last year left the industry reevaluating their businesses. Smaller UK-focused Evoke was one of the firms hardest hit by the tax increases.
Its share price has collapsed in the past few years as the company built up high debt, missed profit expectations and faced rising taxes. It is worth less than a tenth of what it was at its peak in 2021, although it was trading at a six-month high on Monday.
Evoke withheld its outlook for the year in January, and said last month it would shut a number of betting shops from May, as it continued reviewing strategic options for the company, including a potential sale.

Iran Vows Swift Response After US Seizes Vessel as Prediction Markets Cast Doubt on Swift End to Conflict
Sunday April 19, 2026 (10:06 pm EDT)
The U.S. says it attacked and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz that tried to pass its naval blockade. Iran’s military headquarters says the attack and seizure marks a ceasefire violation.
President Donald Trump said U.S. negotiators will be in Pakistan on Monday for another of talks with Iran. But several hours later, Iran had not confirmed it would attend. Trump threatened to destroy civilian infrastructure in Iran if it doesn’t take the deal that the U.S. is offering.
The Strait of Hormuz is closed to shipping due to threats from Iran as the U.S. blockades Iranian ports.
Betting markets see no end in sight for shipping transports getting back to normal at the Strait of Hormuz. Only 25% of those at Polymarket believe the Strait of Hormuz traffic will be back to normal by month's end.
38% (the highest percentage) believe Brent Crude Oil will be over $100 by month's end.
15% believe the national average gas price will be at $3.85 and 31% believe $3.91 by month's end. That is down from the current national average of between $4.05 – $4.11 per gallon.
