Tottenham Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur face a difficult Premier League season. Can Spurs avoid relegation? Here’s a look at their chances and key factors.

Is Tottenham at Risk of Relegation?

As of this end-of-March writing, we are well into the back half of the 2026 Premier League schedule, with each of the 20 teams having completed either 30 or 31 of its 38 games. Looking at the table, it’s been a London season to forget if you’re a Tottenham supporter.

Tottenham Hotspur’s standings have the club sitting in 17th place with a record of 7 wins, 9 draws, and 15 defeats to date, its 30 points just barely above the dreaded ‘drop’ number.

It’s never good when a team has gone through its own single-season coaching carousel. That’s been the case with the Spurs. Beginning with Thomas Frank, whose February banishment led to Igor Tudor. Tudor didn’t last long (44 days, to be exact), winning a total of one game at the helm. Now, ex-Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi is tasked with righting the ship in a hurry.

Coming off a 3-0 shutout at home to Nottingham Forest, the team has now lost six of its last seven Premier League games with one draw. Next is a visit to 11th-place Sunderland on April 12th before (fittingly) Brighton comes to town on April 18th.

While Richarlison and his nine goals have pulled their collective weight, there’s not one teammate with more than four. Tottenham Hotspur’s odds are not particularly promising

Hence, there’s a legitimate shot that Tottenham finds itself relegated, a ‘shame’ not seen since 1976-77. That was a one-and-done before rejoining the first division the next season. Spurs haven’t been ‘sentenced’ to the fate of relegation since the Premier League began in 1992.

The current Premier League outrights find Tottenham Hotspur at +135 to be relegated in the EPL 2025/26 season, with only even-money West Ham a shorter proposition.

Here’s a bit of a primer on Tottenham’s history, including this very poor season…

Have Spurs Ever Been Relegated?

It’s been a while, as in before the Premier League came into existence 34 years ago. Back in 1976-77, in what was known as the First Division, Spurs finished 22nd (last), the first non-top tier in 27 seasons. They ended the season with 12 wins, nine draws, and 21 losses (33 points).

That was the one ‘blemish’ on the resume. Soccer news confirmed Tottenham was promoted after a 20 (win), 16 (draw), and six (loss) season in the penalty box, 56 points, placing it third.

Has Tottenham Ever Won a Trophy?

According to Mr. Internet, Tottenham has won titles as part of the top-flight league, plus eight FA Cups, four League Cups, and UEFA titles in 1972, 1984, and 2025. Included was a League/FA Cup ‘double’ in 1961, making it the first 20th-century European squad to achieve that feat.

Why is Tottenham Called the Spurs?

The moniker ‘Spurs’ is obviously a shortened version, as it appears in Tottenham Hotspur’s standings. Historians (and those of us who cheated and looked) know the name dates to 1882 as an homage to medieval English knight Sir Henry (‘Harry Hotspur’) Percy.

Any Final Thoughts?

There’s not much left of the 2025-26 Premier League schedule, meaning Tottenham Hotspur is burning daylight if it plans to avoid the ignominy that is relegation. Roberto De Zerbi, not necessarily the consensus choice to take over as coach, has the unenviable assignment of igniting the team with seven games left on the schedule.
