Just two days after Mike Shildt announced his retirement as manager of the San Diego Padres, he raised eyebrows Wednesday claiming sports bettors had threatened his life.

Shildt shared the news of being barraged with death threats from sports bettors throughout the 2025 season, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

It's yet another black eye for Major League Baseball and its relationship with sports gambling.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Guardians Pitcher Emmanuel Clase career has now ended over gambling allegations.

Additionally, the stress and toll of being the manager began to wear on Shildt.

Along the way, Shildt experienced chest pains, hair loss, and bad sleeping habits. Ultimately, the Padres lost to the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS.

On Tuesday, BetOnline made AJ Ellis the favorite to replace Shildt in San Diego
