49ers' Ricky Pearsall Shot in Robbery Attempt; Suspect Arrested

Politics

49ers rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot Saturday afternoon in downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco mayor London Breed announced on X that Pearsall was shot in the Union Square area of the city during a robbery attempt. Breed added that the San Francisco Police Department was on the scene immediately and that the suspect was arrested.

NBC Bay Area reported that Pearsall is in stable condition.

The Niners selected Pearsall with the No. 31 pick in April's NFL draft out of the University of Florida.

Harris, Trump Both -120

Former U.S. president and current GOP nominee Donald Trump is now tied with current vice president and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, each at -110 apiece.  Harris had sat alone at -120 with Trump listed at +100.

The odds tightening comes as Trump flip flps on fetus, as the Drudge Report noted.

Donald Trump suggested Thursday he would support a ballot measure that would roll back a six-week abortion ban in Florida, but then his campaign scrambled to walk it back, his latest halting attempt to try to find a middle ground on the issue.

Seeking to blunt Democrats’ advantage with women, the Republican presidential nominee also outlined an expansive proposal to provide federal funding for in vitro fertilization or force insurers to pay for the costly procedure.

Trump said a six-week abortion ban in Florida is too restrictive and doesn’t give women enough time to access the procedure.

Rise of Legal Gambling Helping Fuel Fans’ Ugly Behavior Toward Athletes

The New York Post on Saturday published a piece on the rising threat to athletes courtesy of angry fans losing their bets.

From Phil Mushnick of the Post:

What do you suppose has driven the escalation of “social” media put-downs, threats and unfettered hatred that has been aimed at pro tennis players? What do you suppose has driven the escalation of “social” media put-downs, threats and unfettered hatred that has been aimed at pro tennis players?

Well, is it logical to note that the hatred has coincided with the rise in legal gambling on sports? All sports have reported increased incivilities from “fans” as per their lack of success through the growth and promotion of gambling. Why should tennis be different from golf, basketball and football?

Regardless, easily outraged nuts will always be among us, but digital instant messaging plus legalized wagering from which the sports financially benefit help unscrew the nuts from their bolts.

Mushnick also made reference to Bob Costas' refusal to mention any gambling come-ons in between innings of Major League Baseball games.  Costas, by the way, has admitted to working as a bookie in high school.

The rise in threats to athletes as a result of gambling has led some state regulators to take drastic measures.  A few states are no longer allowing bets on college player props.  Still others are prohibiting aggressive individuals from attending games.
