New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, is expected to miss the rest of the regular 2008 season according to numerous reports, including those coming from CBS Sports. A severe season ending injury to his left knee is the culprit.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady screamed. The fans went quiet.
The seemingly indestructible star of the New England Patriots lay on the ground, clutching his left knee. The NFL's reigning MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion was done for the day -- at least.
If Tom Brady can't start in Week 2 against the Jets, the third-longest active starting streak among NFL quarterbacks will end.
"He was in a lot of pain. When you hear a scream, you know that," Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard said after hitting Brady on the left leg midway through the first quarter.
Untested Matt Cassel took over, and played well as the Patriots beat the Chiefs 17-10 in Sunday's opener. But they needed a last minute defensive stand to do it. Two of the Super Bowl favorites - San Diego and Jacksonville - got knocked off Sunday as well in the opening week of the 2008/2009 season.
Odds on the AFC Conference and the AFC East have become even more enticing, especially after Buffalo's brilliant performance against a tough Seattle Seahawks team.

It's early, no doubt. But if the Bills' objective is to end an eight-year playoff drought this season, they got off to a very promising start in blowing out the four-time defending NFC West champions.
It was a victory that began and ended with Buffalo's special teams. Roscoe Parrish returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown to put the Bills up 14-0 in the second quarter. Then there was kicker Rian Lindell, who recovered a fumble on a kickoff that set up Trent Edwards' 30-yard touchdown pass to Robert Royal -- 20 seconds after Denney scored.
Moorman became the first Bills punter to throw a touchdown pass, and first NFL punter to do so since Pittsburgh's Josh Miller on Dec. 28, 2003. He caught the Seahawks completely flat-footed in finding the 6-foot-7 Denney wide open in the left flats.
"That's a good question," Denney said, of how he eluded the Seahawks after making sure to check in with the official. "I was thinking the whole time they were going to see me over there. ... Just a great play and it worked like we wanted it to."
Meanwhile, the most bet on team of the day, the New York Jets, nearly let one get away in the final seconds but still walked off with a victory against last year's worst team, The Miami Dolphins.
The Jets have now won five straight and 17 of their past 21 meetings with the Dolphins.
"It was shaky, but it's a good start," Favre said. "It's a win, and you can never question a win."
