And Scott Henry was told by Recorder Frank Abbot yesterday: "If there was a sentence for stupidity you would be serving life imprisonment."
That's because Mr. Abbot was on probation and on an "unpaid" work order serving 140 hours of community service when he reportedly fled town and headed to Las Vegas. Once there he took part in the 2008 World Series of Poker.
But when the probation service rang him up to find out why he had not turned out for a work session, his mother told them he had 'run out to get a hair cut before flying to Las Vegas'.
His lawyer Nick Bradley said Henry had an interest in gambling online
and had won a seat at a poker game in Las Vegas. It was not clear which online poker room provided Mr. Abbot with the free seat.
Recorder Abbot told Henry: "You have taken the Mickey out of the system and have displayed a blatant disregard for the law.
"People would think I was daft if I did not make an example of you and send you straight to prison. If there was sentence for stupidity you would be serving life."
As it was Recorder Abbot jailed Henry for three months after hearing he had admitted the burglary straight away, and carried out more than half of the unpaid work hours.
"If people were told how stupid you have been they would not believe it.
"But the law-abiding public get very touchy about people playing the system and getting away with it.
"It grates on people and I have to take into account the public disquiet about people like you who take the Mickey out of, and make fun of the system in such a blatant manner," said the Recorder.
