Oscars darling Meryl Streep may offer the best value for anyone betting on the awards show. Streep would pay out 2/1 odds should she win the Best Actress category where she is the small underdog to Sandra Bullock. The payout would be $20 for every $10 bet at betED.com.
The Detroit Free Press echoes the sentiments of many regarding Streep.
"It's a close race between her and fan favorite Bullock, who just had her best box-office year ever. But Streep's performance as Julia Child was as rich and satisfying as a perfect meal. Look for her to nab her first win since the 1980s."
Streep is widely regarded as one of the most talented and respected movie actors of the modern era and she has plenty of awards to show for it including two Oscars and seven Golden Globes. She has also been nominated for 16 Academy Awards and 25 Golden Globes, more nominations than any other actor in the history of either award.
John Anderson of Newsweek believes that Sandra Bullock has one thing going in her favor: box office receipts.
"The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences clearly loves it when a moneymaking performer gives a performance that can credibly be defined as Oscar-worthy (Nicole Kidman in 'The Hours,' George Clooney in 'Syriana,' to name two)."
But he also added:
"That is unless the Academy finally gives it up for Meryl Streep. As Anderson points out: "Having won critics' prizes in New York, Boston and San Francisco, Streep also took home the Golden Globe this year for best actress in a musical/comedy. She's always a contender. The ever-aging academy membership knows who she is. This is an advantage not necessarily held by the two fabulous younger actresses in the mix, Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious")."
