2017 MLB: The Runline Bets Your MLB Bettors Will Be Wagering On

Experienced MLB bettors will be familiar with runline betting, but many newer or casual MLB bettors may not know much about it.

Runline betting isn’t as popular as some of the other forms of MLB betting as casual bettors tend to favor the moneyline. But the runline can win bettors more cash.

What is Runline betting?

MLB bettors will quickly find out that runline betting is similar to NFL spread betting. When placing a runline bet, bettors must choose a team to wager on. In a baseball game, the runlines are usually 1.5; but some bookies will adjust this.

MLB bettors can then wager on the game favorite to win by scoring over two runs. In contrast, bettors can wager on the underdog to lose by one run or to win the game.

Betting on the runline can land bettors more money than the moneyline bet. But punters will need to be a bit more adventurous to place their money down.

It may not make an MLB bettor rich, but it will land them more cash than the alternatives.

Betting on the Runline

New York Mets +1.5 (-150)

Vs.

Washington Nationals -1.5 (+250)

If the New York Mets are +1.5 then the team needs to lose by one run or win the game for a MLB bettor to win the wager.

A bet on the Nationals means the team must win by two or more runs for the wager to be a winner.

Sharps Love Runline betting

Experience MLB bettors tend to go for the runline bet over the moneyline. The reason for this is down to having more knowledge and insight on the teams playing. Sharps will have crunched the numbers and will know the percentages of teams winning by two or more runs.

Due to casual MLB bettors not being as familiar with the numbers like a sharp, it is often they will wager on the moneyline. Casual bettors may be nervous or turned off on placing a wager on a bet that isn’t an outright winner.

The subtle complexities of runline betting (teams need to score a specific amount of runs) means it can turn casuals off. These complexities are enjoyed by more experienced wagers.

Best Runline Record 2017

The New York Yankees have the best runline record in 2017 at 18-8 (69.2%). Fourteen times this season, the Bronx Bombers have won by two or more runs, while losing by two or more in six games.

The Houston Astros, who are putting in a solid early half of the MLB season, are right behind the Yankees in runline record.

The Astros are 17-11 (60.7%) and have won 15 times by two or more runs. Like the Yankees, Houston has lost six times by two or more runs.

Worst Runline Record 2017

In terms of percentages, the Cleveland Indians have the worst record in runline at 9-18 (33.3%). The Indians have managed just nine wins by two or more runs.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are behind the Indians in runline record with a 7-9 (34.5%) records. The New York Mets are right there with the Angels at 8-12 (37.0%).

Casuals, you probably won’t have to worry too much, as mentioned before, they rarely go for the runline bet.
